Saxon sculpture at Inglesham, Wiltshire

Inglesham, Wiltshire

I will post more about this church later in the week, the church in Inglesham in Wiltshire is a very special and atmospheric place. Here to whet your appetite is a panel of sculpture in the church. A Virgin and Child, which is believed to date from the eleventh century. It has had rather rough treatment, including a time when it served as a mass dial. It is still a glorious and lively piece. An interesting aspect of the iconography is the blessing hand of the Father poking out of heaven.

V much looking forward to your coming post on Inglesham. Have not visited the church, but have seen and been fascinated by Flickr scans posted by you and others. The chancel seems to be the ecclesiological sleuth's dream and nightmare.
